✅ Your End-of-Year Speaking Checklist
It's time to double-down and gear up for your best year in the speaking biz
Guess what?…..
Hopefully you survived pumpkin spice season and are pushing through Mariah-Carey-on-repeat season. 😂
Let’s get to it…
It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Mid-December through Mid-January tends to be a dead season in the speaking business.
Companies are closing out the books for the year and in full-on holiday party mode.
But, that doesn’t mean speakers should be in chill mode.
December 15 - January 15 is your time to get your speaking house in order for the new year.
Your End-of-Year Speaking Checklist
☑️ SYSTEMS
Don’t let this word scare you. If you’re thinking (“But, Daron, I don’t have any systems!”🤷♀️) it’s okay.
Let’s start small.
All of us are at different places on this speaking journey.
If you are a rookie, then you’re probably frustrated you’re not getting more inbound leads.
Been there… 🙋🏾♂️
If you’re a seasoned vet, you probably want to start charging more.
Been there too… 🙋🏾♂️
Pick one timesaver and build it.
For example, take this warm inbound template and remix it to fit your brand:
I hope you are doing well, and that you are emerging from a restful weekend! I am honored that you thought of me as a potential speaker.
I am attaching my speaking collateral to give you a sense of my background, most requested topics, and previous clients.
Finally, here are two speech examples for you to share internally with your team:
TEDx Talk - Rejection is Your Resumé
WGU Commencement Address - Stay In The Deep End
Again, thank you so much for thinking of me and I look forward to talking with you. I've CCed Joy to coordinate a call for us.
Or, craft a cold outbound email to attract more opportunities.
The key is to start small - just pick one thing - and build it before the new year.
☑️ STYLE
I like to study one speaker to pick up any tips that could improve my game.
This year, I’ve selected Casey Gerald.
I’ve mentioned Casey in previous newsletters.
His onstage presence and storytelling are impeccable. There are parts of my keynote that I want to improve, and what better way to do it than by diving into every online talk that Casey has delivered.
One addition to your speaking arsenal could be the difference between a 4-digit and 5-digit keynote.
☑️ SOCIAL
Our last category is social media.
When I reviewed my numbers from 2023, I found that 72 percent of my talks were initiated through LinkedIn DM’s.
You heard me: 72 percent.
That’s a stat that has been steadily rising since 2019 when I doubled down on LinkedIn.
I’m not here to preach to you about what social media platform you should major in (you already know my opinion 🙄), but here’s the point: BE SOMEWHERE.
I don’t care if you have to take close-up shots of you mimicking a speech in your living room. Do it.
Show people that you speak and over time, they will pay you to speak.
The Mic Drop 🎤
I want you to believe (because it is true) that 2024 is going to be a big year in your speaking career.
Make small strides this December and let’s take off in the new year. 🚀
