π The Speaker Wellness Guide: Tips to Stay Healthy, Rested, and Sane on the Road
For the next six weeks, Iβm going to be on planes, trains and automobiles for keynotes.
What I know now that I didnβt know ten years ago is the most important work in this business happens off-stage.
Whether youβre a rookie or seasoned speaker with a jam-packed calendar, letβs dive into some wellness tips to keep you healthy, rested and sane on the road.
Weβve asked a couple of our friends in the business to chime in with some of their best tips.
1. Map It and Make a Plan πΊ
I research the area before arriving to identify healthy eating establishments and easily accessible jiu-jitsu places/fitness gyms. If possible, I book hotels that are close to those.
Then I make sure to carve out time in my schedule to actually go to those places, even if itβs 5am or 8pm after a long day. The key is to treat those blocks of time like really important meetings that you canβt move to different times of the day.Β - Julian Placino
2. Take Direct Pre-10 AM Flights Only βοΈ
You cannot afford to miss an engagement. Never fly to a location the day of the event.
Always take direct early flights. This timing gives you some wiggle room for airline shenanigans.
Oh, and never check a bag. - Daron K. Roberts
3. Bubbles ππ½
It may sound odd, but I do my best to book hotels with bathtubs when Iβm traveling for keynotes. The water relaxes me and allows me to clear my mind and meditate. - Will Baggett
4. Boring Hotels π¨
Iβm a devout Marriott Bonvoy member, and when I first started speaking, I tended to stay at the upper end of the Marriott food chain (JW & W).
But now, I stick with newer Towneplace or SpringHill Suites. Why? They have full kitchens, basic rooms and cost half as much as the top tier brands.
Iβll save that money for vacation. - Daron K. Roberts
5. Sweat ππΎββοΈ
I donβt care if itβs five or fifty minutes, do some kind of accelerated movement the day of your talk. It clears the body and mind. - Darren Palmer
6. Pack Your Own Food π±
I lack discipline when it comes to eating out on the road.
Iβll choose a cheeseburger every time π, so I invest a lot of time and energy into packing healthy meals. - Daron K. Roberts
7. Liquids, Liquids and More Liquids π¦
Water. Tea. More water. More tea. Keep those voice valves lubricated! - Daron K. Roberts
