Elite People Want to be Coached - We just started coaching our tenth client. It’s one thing to read newsletters, watch a few videos and go to bed thinking: “I really need to work on my speaking biz”.
It’s another thing to actually work on your speaking biz.
That’s where coaching comes in. I’ve worked with a coach for 12 years.
The money I invest in the coaching pays me back (at a 5X multiple) by generating more business. In short, my coach helps me make money. 🤑

5 Ways to Improve Your Keynote in Under 5 Minutes
Last week, I delivered what may have been my best keynote in over a decade.
You know when you walk off of a stage and you’re like…
Well, yeah it was like that. Here are five quick tweaks that I use to crush it on stage.
1. Slow the F#$k Down
I can’t overstate this point.
Your brain exaggerates time as you speak. By this I mean that your brain will tell you that you’re going too slowly when you’re actually speaking at a normal speed.
Couple that whacky brain with a racing heart and we have a recipe for Fast and Furious 8.
Slow. Down…
Take exaggerated pauses.
Look into the eyes of that on audience member who looks like she’s at a Beyonce concert.
And take your damn time.
2. Only 3 Points - No More. No Less.
I watched a couple of speakers at a conference five weeks ago.
One speaker had seven points and the other one had seven. 🙈
This is the part where I hurt your feelings:
Stick to three points. I don’t care how smart you are or how much you think you know.
It’s. Not. About. You.
It’s about the audience.
3. Punch ‘Em in the Mouth ASAP
Cut out all of that “I’m so happy to be here” and “Thank you so much, Bob, for the wonderful intro.”
Get the party started ASAP.
Make them stand up and give people hi-fives
Play a song and make them do awkward dances
Get them moving from the jump. The brain stimulation will prime them for your message.
4. Put Somebody on the Spot
Me: “What’s your name?”
Her: “Sarah…👀”
Me: “Well, Sarah, get your self up here!”
I’ve done this multiple times, and you know what always happens…can you guess it?
Somebody’s always yells something like:
Companies, nonprofits, schools…they’re all glorified tribes.
So, if people sense that somebody needs support, then they’ll start cheering and clapping for them.
The only reason why I do this is to create uncertainty.
I want to keep my audience off kilter. I want them thinking: What in the hell is the dude about to do?
Here’s the framework I use:
Uncertainty ➡️ Engagement ➡️ Excitement ➡️ Enlightenment
5. Jump Off the Stage
Ok, first…if you are physically unable to jump…simply walk down from the stage.
We don’t need Bob in HR making any 911 calls. 😂
Remember what I wrote about uncertainty? When you leave the stage, it does two things:
Gets you closer to the people. You become one of them.
Makes people look for you. I call this the Waldo Effect.
Remember, half of the challenge of speaking is keeping the audience engaged.
The Mic Drop 🎤
I’ve talked to quite a few of you who’ve said something like, “I’m gonna start in the fall on this speaking stuff.”
You and I both know that’s just an excuse to kick the can down the road.
Ain’t nobody got time for that. 🙅🏼♂️
